Boston Red Sox

There were several pertinent statistics when reigning American League Cy Young Award winner

Rick Porcello gave up eight earned runs in 4 1⁄3 innings against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.

It was the most runs he had allowed since April 19, 2015, when he gave up eight to the Orioles. He gave up a career-high four home runs, including the second grand slam of his career.

Porcello’s streak of 43 starts going at least five innings ended. It was the third-longest streak by a Red Sox pitcher since 1920. His streak of 15 consecutive quality starts (at least six innings, three earned runs or fewer), which had been the longest in the majors and dated to July 29, also ended.

“It’s just making pitches,” Porcello said. “That’s it. I’ve been in this situation before. Everybody gets roughed up a little bit.”

Mitch Moreland doubled in seven consecutive games, setting a club record and tying the AL mark held by five other players, including Red Sox bench coach Gary DiSarcina in 1998.

The Red Sox scored in the first inning for the first time this season Sunday, in their 12th game. After leading the majors in runs last season by a wide margin, they are in the middle of the pack this season.
