DL Muhammad Wilkerson, a 2011 first-round pick from Temple, has become more vocal and addressed the team several times this preseason.

“We’re trying to forget last season,” he told reporters. “As far as the team is concerned, the Jets didn’t even play last year. It’s a new Jets team. ”

Wilkerson, who signed a contract extension through 2020, is coming off his worst season during the Jets’ 5-11 year. He recorded a career-low 41⁄ sacks and was 2 disciplined for missing a practice. Unlike last preseason when he was recuperating from ankle surgery, he appears healthy and primed for a big year.

“We’re trying to get something good going,” said Wilkerson, the longest-tenured defensive player.

Rookie watch: WR ArDarius Stewart saw his first action of the preseason, catching two passes for 23 yards. The thirdround pick from Alabama is recovering from groin and thumb injuries. Stewart has an opportunity to see significant playing time for a woefully thin and inexperienced receiving corps.

Noteworthy: Given the poor performances by secondyear QB Christian Hackenberg this preseason, it would be a major upset if Josh McCown, a 15-year veteran, wasn’t under center for Week 1. Head coach Todd Bowles says he will announce the team's starting quarterback Aug. 28. ... LB Darron

Lee and DL Leonard Williams have been cleared by the NFL of any violations of the league's personal conduct policy following a review of an incident at a music festival in June. In a moment caught on video, Williams stepped in front of Lee, who had an argument with a girlfriend, according to coach Todd Bowles. Williams then forcibly removed his teammate from a potential altercation.
