New Orleans Saints
The preseason debut of QB
Drew Brees normally would make the biggest splash coming out of the third exhibition, but second-year coordinator Dennis
Allen and his vastly improved defense continue to make waves.
For the third consecutive game, Allen’s unit gave up yards and points grudgingly in a 13-0 win against the Houston Texans at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
The Saints have not allowed an offensive touchdown in two consecutive games and their No. 1 defense has not yielded a point in
the preseason. Brees completed 11 of 15 passes for 76 yards with only one of his five possessions ending in points (a 26-yard field goal by Will Lutz). The game also marked the preseason debuts of DE Cam Jordan and RBs Adrian Peterson and Mark Ingram, who combined on 13 touches for 34 yards from scrimmage. Rookie watch: Three defensive draft picks started for the Saints — top pick CB Marshon Lattimore, second-round FS Marcus Williams and third
round LB Alex Anzalone. ... Starting LT Ryan Ramczyk, the 32nd overall pick, was held out with an unspecified injury. He has been in and out of the lineup since having hip surgery before the draft. ... Sixth-round DE Al-Quadin Muhammad collected his team-high third sack. ... Free agent RB Darius Victor scored the game’s only TD on a 3-yard run. He rushed eight times for 30 yards and lost a fumble.
Noteworthy: LB Nate Stupar injured his hamstring. ... Newcomer WR Ted Ginn Jr. accounted for 66 yards on six touches, including a 14-yard reception and 24-yard end-around. ... No. 4 WR Brandon Coleman had two catches for 44 yards, including a key 31-yarder on the game’s only TD drive. ... C Max
Unger (foot surgery) is pointing to make his preseason debut on Aug. 31 against the Baltimore Ravens.
