Cleveland Indians

USA TODAY Sports Weekly - - AL CENTRAL -

It seems nothing can stop the defending AL champions — even having to play two doubleheaders in three days.

The Indians swept the New York Yankees on Aug. 30 at Yankee Stadium. Following an off day, Cleveland took a twinbill at Detroit.

“I told these guys that we were going to have to play a lot of baseball in three days whether we liked it or not, so we might as well play well,” manager Terry Fran

cona said. The sweeps were part of a winning streak that reached 12 games Sept. 4 when the Indians defeated the White Sox 5-3. They began the week with a nine-game lead over the Twins in the AL Central as they seek their second consecutive division title.

Right- hander Josh Tomlin (left hamstring) got the win in his return from the disabled list Sept. 3, holding the Tigers to one run in 52⁄ innings after being out 3 since July 31. Also activated from the DL were left fielder Lonnie Chisenhall (right calf ) and out

fielder Abraham Almonte (left hamstring).

Right fielder Jay Bruce pledged to donate $100,000 to help victims of Hurricane Harvey, which ravaged the Houston area. He is a native of Beaumont, Texas.
