Storyline of the week
Kids make presence felt: The young players on the Chargers roster are standing out. Third-round rookie LB Kyzir White has taken over as a starter. Rookie FS Derwin James worked with the starters for the first time and intercepted a Drew Brees pass intended for WR Ted Ginn Jr. on the third play of the game. RG Forrest Lamp will have one final tuneup this week before the team learns whether he will be ready for the opener. “When he’s ready to go, we’re definitely going to get him in the rotation,” head coach Anthony Lynn told ESPN. “If he’s not the starter, Forrest played tackle in college and played guard for us last year (before his injury). He’s a versatile guy. We’re definitely going to use him.”
Rookie to watch
RB Detrez Newsome seems to be getting better the more he plays. Last week against the Saints, he scored the Chargers’ lone touchdown while playing with the starting unit. Newsome appears to have earned a roster spot after his preseason play.
