Storyline of the week
Decisions, decisions: Coach Todd Bowles has a tough choice. He won’t announce his starting quarterback until after the preseason finale, but the competition appears pretty wrapped up after a Week 3 loss to the Giants. Sam Darnold looked the part, putting together his best performance as a pro while playing with and against starters. The rookie went 8-for-16 for 86 yards, a touchdown pass and zero turnovers. Then there was Teddy Bridgewater, who went 11-for-15 for 104 yards, no scores and no turnovers. Either would do the trick for Bowles under center, as would veteran Josh McCown, who hasn’t played much this preseason.
Darnold is the toast of New York these days. The 21-year-old appears to be the front-runner for the starting job, but even if Darnold doesn’t start Week 1 in Detroit, he’s given Jets fans a sense of hope for the future. The Jets have had one winning season since 2010, the last time they reached the playoffs.
