Storyline of the week

Backing up Carr: QB Derek Carr has played only seven snaps in the preseason, as the Raiders have wanted to give their backup quarterbacks extra snaps. However, it’s becoming more evident each week that they might not have a suitable backup on the roster. QBs Connor Cook and EJ Manuel struggled again last week against the Packers, combining to complete 14 of 27 passes for 159 yards. Cook had an interception. The Raiders might need to look for a veteran quarterback in free agency or via trade over the next few weeks.

Rookie watch

Third-round pick and DE Arden Key had his best game of the preseason versus Green Bay, starting in place of star DE Khalil Mack. Key was in the backfield all night and the Packers tackles couldn’t keep up with him. While he didn’t record a sack, he drew multiple holding calls with his speed off the edge. If Mack, who is holding out for a new contract, does not return to the field by Week 1 of the regular season, expect Key to replace him.
