TONIGHT ON TV
CRITIC’S CORNER
SURVIVOR CBS, 8 ET/PT
There was a time when Survivor was new and so huge that it seemed the whole nation was set to dissect the goings-on at the last tribal council. Well, in its 34th season the show remains popular, if less so than the first, when 52 million turned out for the finale. But hey: There are a lot of shows out there that would kill for its current average of 10 million, which is why Survivor will be back next season with two more crops of castaways.
EMPIRE FOX, 9 ET/PT
Survivor has a good excuse for its ratings erosion: It’s been on for 17 years. Empire, which also concludes Wednesday, has seen its ratings plummet to Earth in a mere three seasons — a consequence of scattered storytelling and an over-reliance on guest stars at the expense of the main characters. Maybe next season, try getting back to basics.
ARCHER FXX, 10 ET/PT
A host of series exit Wednesday, but the one I’ll miss the most is
Archer — particularly because this season’s end also most likely means the end of the show’s “Dreamland” 1940s sojourn. The good news is that Archer has been renewed for two more seasons. We’ll just have to take comfort in that.
