Otto Warmbier’s death cries out for retribution

-

LETTERS LETTERS@USATODAY.COM I can only hope that the retribution for the

egregious death of Otto Warmbier is swift and sure. This horrible tragedy, brought on from what I consider no more than a college prank, resulted in the death of a vibrant, loving and intelligent young man.

I can only imagine the suffering endured by his family, and I was brought to tears by their description of seeing his face turn peaceful even in a coma as he realized that he was at home at last.

As a nation, we really need to handle North Korea with every imaginable sanction, worthy of how you would treat a bunch of psychotic despots. In the meantime, we in New Mexico send our prayers and our deepest condolences to Warmbier’s grieving family. Stephen Fox Santa Fe

President Trump, I wouldn’t take too much credit for the “good job” you and Secretary State Rex Tillerson did. Otto Warmbier was brain dead; that’s not a successful recovery of an American citizen. A tragic outcome caused by brutal people. Russell E. Glass

Any American who travels to North Korea does so at his own risk. Americans have no reason to expect their country to use extraordinary measures to save them from their own bad deci-

The world community should emphatically discourage any travel to North Korea until conditions there change. China needs to use all its influence to get North Korea to modify its current treatment of outsiders — and especially its own citizens. We can’t bring back the fallen, but we can honor them by ensuring that all brutal dictators behind these atrocities are eventually brought to justice. Peter Fonseca

Some Americans fail to realize that some parts of the world can be almost barbaric. Bill Andrews

We asked our followers whether student trips to North Korea should stop, after the death of Otto Warmbier. Students should never have been allowed to go to North Korea since the communist takeover! I’m sure Warmbier wasn’t the first captured. @Theresa_Gabi Heck yes! Stop student travel unless safety can be guaranteed. North Korea is a wild card. You’re at risk of being detained for any small infraction. @QuabbityAshwitz It’s at their own risk. Let students travel, if they want to. @EDA1155 Why on earth would anyone want to travel to North Korea? People there are trying to get out! @MarciaCuccaro If America truly cared about its citizens, it wouldn’t let them travel to North Korea in the first place. @TrueNewws For more, follow @USATOpinion or #tellusatoday.
