The third season of FX’s Minnesota-set crime drama has landed with less fanfare than the first two installments, but it won’t go out quietly. The cast, including Ewan McGregor playing two roles, The Leftovers’ standout Carrie Coon, and David Thewlis (in theaters now in Wonder Woman), have given fantastic performances for the first nine episodes. The season finale, written by creator Noah Hawley, will bring the simmering conflicts to a head, with one last chance for Coon’s good cop Gloria Burgle to take down the various criminal elements wreaking havoc and committing murder. Given the season’s somber tone so far, their chances don’t seem great.
