Failure-to-replace yields just deserts for GOP

LETTERS LETTERS@USATODAY.COM

The unthinkable has befallen President Trump and Republicans in Congress: Their long-standing plans to erase Barack Obama’s legacy through the repeal of the Affordable Care Act have failed.

The scheme was cruel and wildly unpopular with Americans, but that didn’t stop a president who is bent on winning at all costs and his many willing servants in Congress. Republicans are being shown the price of putting forth a plan that would take health care insurance away from millions so that those at the top could be rewarded.

I can only imagine the president’s rage after stating he could not imagine Congress leaving town without passing a “beautiful” health care bill.

Another valuable lesson drawn from this debacle is the full unmasking of GOP hypocrisy. Its continued votes for repeal of the ACA during the Obama presidency were fraudulent. We now know the members had no idea how they would replace it.

The crushing defeat is just deserts for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his colleagues. Reasonable people know that there are flaws in the ACA. They can (and must) be fixed. McConnell and his colleagues now have no option but to take that path rather than to tear out the law by the roots.

I hope McConnell and his colleagues are enjoying a healthy dose of crow. Once in a while, justice prevails. Oren M. Spiegler Upper St. Clair, Pa.

We demand single-payer health care like the rest of the civilized world! Enough wasting time and effort. Criminalize anything for profit in health care. Nothing matters more than lives. Chris Terry

If Republicans had been writing a bill for the seven years they were whining about Obamacare they might have actually had a good one. But no, it looks like they wrote this one in less than an hour. Ray Works

Obama care is a wreck; health care should have never been an entitlement like Obama made it. Democrats are to blame on this debacle. John Glasgow

We asked our followers their thoughts on the Senate’s new proposal to simply repeal the Affordable Care Act. Republicans want to disregard anyone who’s not part of the 1%. Problem is, their voters don’t care so long as the “others” get hurt worse. @GaLiberal Either repeal Obamacare or be required to use it yourself! @BRCIVW Republicans cannot govern. Hunger for power and tax cuts for the rich drive their agenda. No empathy or understanding for the vulnerable. @natchezalley6 This is a great strategy to force Democrats to the table. Resistance is not a form of government. Force a bipartisan solution! @Code_3_Three The employer mandate that keeps most as “part time” employees has to be repealed, at least! Can’t live on minimum wage and 20 hours a week. @Michael31158 For more, follow @USATOpinion or #tellusatoday.
