We need to do more on gun control, and now

-

While everyone is scrambling for

answers, the next shooter is most likely already identifying his location, locking his targets, loading his magazines and sadly, he might be planning to gain the reputation of the next “mass shooter.”

I realize law enforcement can’t bring every mass shooting to a halt, but as a civilian, I believe more could be done. How many more shootings will it take before security checks are required at hotels, buses and even churches?

Earlier this year, a teacher was killed by her husband in San Bernardino, Calif. He walked in the school where there were no security measures. After the shooting, additional measures were put in place and instant background checks are now required for visitors. I would think after the shooting in Columbine, all schools should be required to have extreme security measures.

I was a first year student when a UCLA professor was killed in his office. I still feel unsafe. Anyone can walk in many of the classrooms and have a seat. We’re at a fork in the road, and we seem to be paralyzed. Kiana Deane, UCLA student

Something must be done. There is no time

to debate gun control. We’ve waited for our representatives in Congress to protect us. We can’t just accept what happened in Las Vegas as normal. We can no longer accept Congress’ meaningless “thoughts and prayers” response. We need real leadership to stand up and say enough, and act on it. We need Congress to introduce a bill that bans all assault and multiround weapons, all silencers and all weapons of mass destruction. They’re being used against the general public for the express purpose of mass murder. They’re not hunting tools. They’re not used to protect the innocent. They’re used to murder civilians.

Members of Congress, if you’re not willing to step up to the plate, then step down. We need a response other than your boilerplate letter saying you understand. We don’t need your understanding, we need you to do your job! John Munn
