‘ Three Billboards,’ ‘Lady Bird’ lead race for SAGs

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri just got a major leg up in the awards race.

After scoring six Golden Globes nomination­s Monday, Martin McDonagh’s rape-revenge drama picked up four Screen Actors Guild Awards nods on Wednesday, including outstandin­g performanc­e by a movie cast. The film’s stars, Frances McDormand (outstandin­g actress), Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell (supporting actors), also were recognized.

Coming-of-age comedy Lady Bird flew close behind with three nomination­s, for actress (Saoirse Ronan), supporting actress (Laurie Metcalf ) and outstandin­g cast. The SAG Awards’ top category was rounded out by three surprise nominees: Jordan Peele’s social thriller Get Out, romantic comedy The Big Sick and Netflix’s racial drama Mudbound.

With Steven Spielberg’s star-studded The Post shut out and Golden Globes leader The Shape of Water scoring just two nods (Sally Hawkins for actress and Richard Jenkins for supporting actor), many unexpected contenders cropped up in the nomination­s.

Judi Dench earned her sixth lead-actress SAG nomination, playing Queen Victoria in Victoria & Abdul, and Denzel Washington clinched his fifth lead-actor nod for legal drama Roman J. Israel, Esq. After entering the awards race last minute with Golden Globes nomination­s, Downsizing’s Hong Chau and Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya were recognized as supporting actress and lead actor, respective­ly.

Timothée Chalamet ( Call Me By Your Name) and James Franco ( The Disaster Artist) continued their strong awards showings with lead-actor nomination­s, as did The Florida Project’s Willem Dafoe for supporting. I, Tonya’s Margot Robbie and Allison Janney skated to lead- and supporting-actress nods, respective­ly.

Filling out the acting honors, Mary J. Blige ( Mudbound) and Holly Hunter ( The Big Sick) were acknowledg­ed in the supporting-actress category, and Steve Carell was served a supporting-actor nomination for tennis movie Battle of the Sexes.

On the TV end, HBO’s Big Little Lies and Netflix’s Stranger Things and GLOW led the nomination­s with four each. Big Little Lies earned outstandin­g actress in a limited series nomination­s for stars Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoo­n, and Alexander Skarsgård was recognized as outstandin­g actor.

Stranger Things will compete in outstandin­g drama ensemble with The Crown, Game of Thrones, The Handmaid’s Tale and This Is Us, and GLOW will go up against Black-ish, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Veep and Orange Is the New Black for comedy ensemble.

Notably, Robin Wright was nominated for drama series actress for Netflix’s House of Cards, which she will continue for a final season without co-star (and past SAG winner) Kevin Spacey, who was fired amid explosive sexual harassment allegation­s. Amazon’s Transparen­t — another SAG-winning show hit by sexual harassment accusation­s against star Jeffrey Tambor — was passed over entirely.

The 24th annual SAG Awards air live Jan. 21 (8 ET/5 PT) on TNT and TBS. Kristen Bell hosts.
