Don’t blame Apple for bad parenting

-

Technology is improving and enhancing throughout time. Saying that smartphone devices are one major cause of anxiety and depression is a scapegoat in avoiding the real issue: poor parenting.

Anxiety and depression can result from many factors such as bullying, lifechanging events, loneliness, among many others. These issues occurred even before the spike in new technology. Targeting Apple products or encourag- ing parental controls on smartphones is not only unnecessary but it also won’t address the issue. Instead of having parents limit screen time for their child, or monitoring their child’s social media platforms, parents should improve their skills and develop more family-oriented habits. Being involved with the child and spending time to talk to the about their day or how they are feeling does make a difference, especially for a child who might be dealing with anxiety, depression, or having suicidal thoughts.
