Special Corvette on auction block
As the latest Barrett-Jackson auto auction gets underway, there’s one stunning sports car that just can’t seem to stay sold — and for a good reason.
It’s a white 1988 Chevrolet Corvette, one of only 2,050 with the 35th Anniversary Special Edition Package, that came to the sales block not once but twice at Barrett-Jackson’s big Scottsdale, Ariz., auction in January. Now it comes up again Saturday at the Palm Beach, Fla., auction.
Why the quick turnover? It’s not because of buyer’s remorse or because the car isn’t unique.
It’s so special, in fact, that it was a favorite of Barrett-Jackson CEO Craig Jackson, who was given it as a gift by a friend at his 2006 Scottsdale auction. Rather, the turnover is due to a good cause. All proceeds from the sale of the Corvette go to the American Heart Association. The first buyer purchased it knowing that his winning bid would amount to a big check to the association.
Then it was donated again soon after in Scottsdale so another bidder would take a crack at it. It raised a total of more than $350,000 for the charity.
This time, it’s yet to be seen whether the buyer keeps a gleaming Corvette to drive and admire as part of his or her own collection or once again turns right around and sends it back on the block to raise even more money.
As built, the RPO Z01 — its official General Motors designation — cost
$29,480 when new, plus another
$4,795 for the 35th anniversary package.
