Forever 21 is latest retailer to phase out mohair sales

- Charisse Jones

Fashionistas searching for sweaters and scarves made from mohair will soon find them harder to buy.

Low-priced clothing chain Forever 21 becomes the latest chain to ban the fabric amid concerns about animal rights.

The retailer will ban the yarn by 2020. The change comes in the wake of a video by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that shows goats that are the fabric’s source being mistreated by harvesters in South Africa.

“Forever 21 does not condone animal cruelty and has worked with PETA on several important initiatives over the years,” the retailer said in a statement. “Today, Forever 21 hereby confirms that it will begin to phase out all products containing mohair and pledges that it will be ‘mohair free’ by the year 2020.”

PETA produced a video that showed workers in South Africa, which provides more than 50% of the world’s mohair, injuring and killing goats as they obtained the material.

Fast-fashion giants Zara and H&M are among the other retailers that have similarly said they will no longer sell products containing mohair by 2020.
