All Ariana Grande’s new album, Sweetener, needs is a release date to cement its status as one of the season’s most anticipated albums. Grande returned this spring with rousing single No Tears Left to Cry and news that her new album would arrive this summer. The next song Grande revealed is The Light Is Coming, which she unveiled live during her set at Los Angeles’ Wango Tango festival last week. Kicking off with a Nicki Minaj verse, the track’s rubbery beat trades the swaggering sex appeal of Side to Side, Grande’s previous collaboration with Minaj, for quirky production from Pharrell, invoking his latest single,
Lemon, with Rihanna. The Light Is Coming may not make for a smash single like Side to Side, but it shows Grande isn’t afraid to tap into her weirder side.
