A story Aug. 2 that put Apple’s stock market valuation in context conflated the company’s stock market value with its ability to make purchases and should have been clear about the difference between stock market value and GDP. Apple wouldn’t be able to convert all of its outstanding stock into cash, and the company’s stock market valuation isn’t the equivalent of gross domestic product.
