Waikiki Editor’s Picks

Waikiki Magazine - - WELCOME -

2013 is off to a wonderful start! With the holiday rush well behind us and the recent arrival of Chinese New Year, we can now all look forward to (hopefully) lessfrazzled days ahead. Being in Hawai‘i, there’s a natural propensity to slow down— after all, it’s difficult to ignore a Waikiki beach sunset or Diamond Head view—and actually stop to take a look at what our surroundings have to offer.

And boy, do these surroundings have plenty to offer. Waikiki is a shopping, dining and activities playground, to say the least, and you can have a taste of everything all within the same vicinity.

For starters, check out the wide variety of souvenir shops, trendy boutiques and high-end fashion houses. From the diverse DFS Galleria Waikiki to the goodsspecific Leather Soul, retail venues certainly run the gamut. We also have a slew of convenience stores for sundries and last-minute purchases. More than just convenience stores, these budget-friendly shops have everything from potato chips to sunblock to slippers. For more information on these one-stop shops, turn to p. 28.

Come mealtime (or snack time) take your pick from hundreds of dining options. Those who want to sample one of Hawai‘i’s most recognized restaurants should head for Roy’s Waikiki. Flip to p. 63 and read more on how celebrity chef Roy Yamaguchi defines Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine. But if you’re anything like me— someone who bases dinner on dessert— go to p. 60 for our rundown on sweet treats around Waikiki. Whether creamy, fruity or refreshingly tart, you’ll surely find something to indulge in.

We have happy hour covered as well. If bar hopping is on your list of to-dos, how about paying one of Waikiki’s Tiki bars a visit? We give you a few suggestions on p. 72.

Finally, take in your local environs by participating in an activity or two. Whale-watching season is still in its peak, so get out there and experience the true majesty of these grand creatures ( p. 52). Or if pampering is on your agenda, you may want to book an appointment at The Spa at Trump. Aside from tensionbusting massages and skinrelieving body wraps, the tony spa is the only place in Waikiki that offers Kate Sommerville facials. Glowing skin is just a moment away ( p. 45)!

For more timely suggestions, check out our calendar of events on p. 54. Hula lessons, live concert schedules, farmers markets and more—we definitely have you covered! Aloha and enjoy the issue.
