COMMUNITY · The Cherokee Regional Library System’s 2016 Food for Fines Campaign begins Tuesday, Nov. 1, and will continue through Wednesday, Nov. 23. Library patrons may “pay” library overdue fines with a canned food item. This will help re-stock food banks in Dade and Walker County Georgia. Items collected will be donated to Tri State Food Bank, The Cottage, the Care Mission and the Rossville Church of Christ Food Pantry. One canned food item equals $1 in paid fines with a limit of 10 cans (or $10 in fines). Lost or damaged book fees may not be paid with food. Food items must be in good condition and unexpired. COMMUNITY · Camp New Dawn, 245 S. Cedar Lane, in Chickamaug­a, will host its eighth annual fundraisin­g turkey shoot Saturday, Nov. 12, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Shoot will start at 9 a.m. 12/20 gauge allowed. All guns will be checked for choke size. Fun for whole family. Camp New Dawn is a small Christian summer camp/retreat center in southwest Walker County entering its 20th year of offering summer camps to kids of all ages. COMMUNITY · The city of LaFayette and Downtown Developmen­t Authority will host the fifth annual Reindeer Run Saturday, Dec. 3. Racers kick off at Joe Stock Memorial Park in LaFayette at 9 a.m. This is a family-friendly event with Santa, elves, hot chocolate and more. Reindeer antlers will be on sale before the race for $1. The money raised goes to fund the 13th annual LaFayette Shop with a Cop/Firefighte­r program. Local police and firefighte­rs take 30 to 40 kids shopping for Christmas presents for themselves and their families. The event includes a ride to the Walmart store in a fire truck. Early registrati­on will be open through Saturday, Nov. 26. Individual registrati­on is $25 and teams of five cost $100. The cost after Nov. 26, is $30 for the individual registrati­on and $125 for teams. There will be awards for first, second and third place in race categories. For more informatio­n call 423-708-4298. COMMUNITY · Ty Willeford, an Edward Jones financial advisor in LaFayette, is supporting the Chattanoog­a Area Food Bank, which services several surroundin­g counties, including Walker, by using his office as a dropoff location for a canned food drive. Local residents may help support this effort by bringing in items to the Edward Jones branch office through Friday, Dec. 16. Food donations may be dropped off at 503 North Main Street in LaFayette during regular business hours. Suggested food items include boxed mac and cheese, beans, peanut butter, canned vegetable and meats, and dried goods such as flour, sugar and cornmeal.

COMMUNITY · The Family Crisis Center is seeking volunteers to play with children one night a week. You must be 18 years old and undergo a background check. This is a great opportunit­y to make a positive impact on these children and provide some much needed help and support to the family members caring for these kids. The Family Crisis Center of Walker, Dade, Catoosa, and Chattooga Counties helps families live abuse free and is supported in part through donations to the shelter and the thrift stores. COMMUNITY · Summervill­e, Ga., is gearing up for its annual “Steam into Summervill­e Railroad Days,” a seven-week celebratio­n that ushers in fall and visitors of all ages, bringing a wide array of festivitie­s to Summervill­e’s Dowdy Park and the Summervill­e Depot. The Tennessee Valley Railroad’s Summervill­e Steam Excursion will arrive at the historic Summervill­e Depot each Saturday beginning Oct. 1-Nov. 12. Steam engine passenger trains are also set to arrive at the depot Sundays, Oct. 30, and Nov. 13. Tickets are purchased through the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum at tvrail.com. These vintage train rides follow a historic route from Grand Junction Station in Chattanoog­a to the Historic Summervill­e Depot. To close out the “Steam into Summervill­e Railroad Days” there will be double steam engine arrivals Nov. 12 and 13.

COMMUNITY · An exhibit on mining in northwest Georgia is on display at the Welcome Center across from the Marsh House on N. Main Street, in LaFayette. Coal and iron ore mining provided many jobs in the 20th century in this area. Open to the general public Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1:30-3:30 p.m.
