Trinity Baptist holds off Lady Bobcats

- By Scott Herpst

The Georgia Northwestern Lady Bobcats cut a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit in half with 2:20 to play on Tuesday night, but would not get any closer as visiting Trinity Baptist from Jacksonville, Florida rode out of town with a 42-33 victory in Rossville.

Searching for their first victory of the season, the Lady Bobcats were tied 9-9 after the first period and trailed 18-13 after a low-scoring first half. The Lady Eagles increased their advantage to as many as 13 points in the early part of the second half and led, 37-25, midway through the final period.

But Georgia Northwestern would begin to mount a charge in late stages as Katy Phillips, Kaylin Graham and Carrie Benedict all hit buckets to pull the Lady Bobcats to within six, 37-31, with just over two minutes remaining.

However, Julianna Calice would end the run a pair of free throws and the Lady Eagles would score five of the game’s final seven points to pick up the win.

Calice would finish with 17 points to lead all scorers, while Ta’Nasia Pasters finished with 10 and Emily Merritt added nine.

Phillips had 12 points, but fouled out with just over 90 seconds to play. She added nine rebounds and two assists and was the only Lady Bobcat in double figures. Benedict and Sprite Dyer had six points each, while Sharqueva “Bunny” McCoy added five points and grabbed seven boards.

Georgia Northwestern (0-5) will host the Bryan College junior varsity Lady Lions on Thursday at the Rossville Athletic Center, starting at 5:30 p.m. That game will be followed by the Georgia Northwestern-Bryan JV men’s game at 7:30.
