More na­tional hon­ors for Wil­cox

The hon­ors con­tinue to roll in for ris­ing Her­itage High School se­nior Cole Wil­cox.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound righthanded pitcher and first base­man, who will be head­ing to Chicago later this month for the 2017 Un­der Ar­mour All-Amer­i­can Base­ball Game, picked up two more huge na­tional hon­ors last week.

Wil­cox was named to the 40-man ros­ter of USA Base­ball for its 18U Na­tional Team Tri­als. The ros­ter was an­nounced at the Ma­jor League Base­ball All- Star Game FanFest in Miami last Mon­day, nine days af­ter the 2017 Tour­na­ment of Stars, the pri­mary iden­ti­fi­ca­tion event for the 18U Na­tional Team.

The 40-man ros­ter in­cludes play­ers from 17 dif­fer­ent states.

The 18U Na­tional Team Tri­als will be­gin Satur­day, Aug. 19, in Minneapolis, Minn. and the fi­nal 20-man na­tional team ros­ter will be an­nounced on Thurs­day, Aug. 24.

The 2017 18U Na­tional Team will play in a se­ries of four ex­hi­bi­tion games

against Iowa West­ern Com­mu­nity Col­lege, the Min­nesota Bliz­zard and Madi­son Col­lege from Aug. 26-29 be­fore trav­el­ing to Thun­der Bay, On­tario, Canada for the 2017 World Base­ball Soft­ball Con­fed­er­a­tion (WBSC) U-18 Base­ball World Cup.

Team USA is the three-time de­fend­ing World Cup cham­pion and will look to be­come the sec­ond coun­try to win four straight gold medals in the tour­na­ment.

“We are ex­cited to bring these 40 play­ers to Minneapolis in Au­gust to con­tinue the process of com­pet­ing for a spot on the 18U Na­tional Team,” said Matt Blood, 18U Na­tional Team Direc­tor at USA Base­ball. “We feel these 40 play­ers are very tal­ented but are also qual­ity in­di­vid­u­als that will rep­re­sent the USA well in In­ter­na­tional com­pe­ti­tion.”

The ath­letes se­lected for the 18U Na­tional Team Tri­als are cho­sen from the USA Base­ball 17U Na­tional Team Iden­ti­fi­ca­tion Se­ries (NTIS) and the Tour­na­ment of Stars.

will once again serve as the man­ager for the 18U Na­tional Team in 2017 af­ter lead­ing the U.S. to a gold medal at the 2014 COPABE Pan Am “AAA” Cham­pi­onships. Ricky Mein­hold (pitch­ing coach), Bill Mosiello (as­sis­tant coach) and Gregg Ritchie (as­sis­tant coach) round out the coach­ing staff.

In ad­di­tion to mak­ing the 40-man 18U ros­ter of USA Base­ball, Wil­cox was also se­lected to play in the 2017 Per­fect Game All-Amer­i­can Clas­sic. Those ros­ters were re­leased dur­ing an on­line se­lec­tion show on MLB.com as part of MLB’s All-Star Game Fan Fest last Tues­day.

Wil­cox, a University of Ge­or­gia com­mit­ment, was one of eight Ge­or­gia play­ers named to the Per­fect Game East ros­ter. He helped lead the Gen­er­als to their first Class AAAA Fi­nal Four ap­pear­ance back in the spring.

The Un­der Ar­mour All-Amer­i­can Game will be played at Wrigley Field in Chicago on July 29, while the Per­fect Game All-Amer­i­can Clas­sic will be held on Aug. 13 at Petco Park in San Diego.

Both games will broad­cast on the MLB Net­work.
