More national honors for Wilcox
The honors continue to roll in for rising Heritage High School senior Cole Wilcox.
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound righthanded pitcher and first baseman, who will be heading to Chicago later this month for the 2017 Under Armour All-American Baseball Game, picked up two more huge national honors last week.
Wilcox was named to the 40-man roster of USA Baseball for its 18U National Team Trials. The roster was announced at the Major League Baseball All- Star Game FanFest in Miami last Monday, nine days after the 2017 Tournament of Stars, the primary identification event for the 18U National Team.
The 40-man roster includes players from 17 different states.
The 18U National Team Trials will begin Saturday, Aug. 19, in Minneapolis, Minn. and the final 20-man national team roster will be announced on Thursday, Aug. 24.
The 2017 18U National Team will play in a series of four exhibition games
against Iowa Western Community College, the Minnesota Blizzard and Madison College from Aug. 26-29 before traveling to Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada for the 2017 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-18 Baseball World Cup.
Team USA is the three-time defending World Cup champion and will look to become the second country to win four straight gold medals in the tournament.
“We are excited to bring these 40 players to Minneapolis in August to continue the process of competing for a spot on the 18U National Team,” said Matt Blood, 18U National Team Director at USA Baseball. “We feel these 40 players are very talented but are also quality individuals that will represent the USA well in International competition.”
The athletes selected for the 18U National Team Trials are chosen from the USA Baseball 17U National Team Identification Series (NTIS) and the Tournament of Stars.
will once again serve as the manager for the 18U National Team in 2017 after leading the U.S. to a gold medal at the 2014 COPABE Pan Am “AAA” Championships. Ricky Meinhold (pitching coach), Bill Mosiello (assistant coach) and Gregg Ritchie (assistant coach) round out the coaching staff.
In addition to making the 40-man 18U roster of USA Baseball, Wilcox was also selected to play in the 2017 Perfect Game All-American Classic. Those rosters were released during an online selection show on MLB.com as part of MLB’s All-Star Game Fan Fest last Tuesday.
Wilcox, a University of Georgia commitment, was one of eight Georgia players named to the Perfect Game East roster. He helped lead the Generals to their first Class AAAA Final Four appearance back in the spring.
The Under Armour All-American Game will be played at Wrigley Field in Chicago on July 29, while the Perfect Game All-American Classic will be held on Aug. 13 at Petco Park in San Diego.
Both games will broadcast on the MLB Network.
