Lady Trojans get stung in extra innings
Last year’s clash in Chickamauga was a thriller and the rematch in Calhoun last week was equally as barnburning.
And just like the last meeting, the home team found a way.
The Calhoun Lady Jackets, ranked No. 1 in the state in Class AAA, scrapped out a run in the bottom of the eighth to slip past Gordon Lee, 1-0 last Tuesday. The Lady Trojans (5-1) came in as the No. 1-ranked team in Class 1A Public.
Gordon Lee had beaten Calhoun, 2-1, a year ago.
Pitchers Blair Hall and Canaan Burnett dueled into extra innings. Hall threw all eight innings, allowing three hits and striking out four, while Burnett pitched 7.2 innings, giving up just two hits and also fanning four.
“Canaan pitched as well tonight as she has pitched all year,” Gordon Lee head coach Dana Mull said. “You hate to lose that one when she pitched as well as she did.”
Gracey Kruse had a double for the Lady Trojans, while Maddie Clark and Macie Pearson each singled in the loss.
Gordon Lee will get back to Region 6-A play this Tuesday with a trip to No. 8 Mt. ZionCarroll. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
On Thursday, the Lady Trojans will head to Berry College in Rome for a region doubleheader against No. 9 Bowdon.
