Ups and Downs For Junior Wolves

- By Mark Humphrey

LINCOLN — Costly turnovers ended dreams of Lincoln having an undefeated season in junior high football with the junior Wolves losing, 16-14, at Gravette Sept. 22.

The road game was not a very good night offensively for the junior Wolves, who beat themselves with three interceptions and a lost fumble. Six drives were halted as Lincoln committed four turnovers and twice turned the ball over on downs. Gravette scored on a 95-yard touchdown run on their opening drive. Lincoln then threw an interception on their second offensive play, but prevented the junior Lions from scoring. The junior Wolves finally got on track on their next offensive drive capped by an 8-yard touchdown run by Abraham Calvillo (6 carries, 40 yards) late in the first quarter. The extra- point failed leaving the score, 8-6, in favor of the junior Lions.

Lincoln would take a 14-8 lead into halftime after a 35-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tyler Brewer (7-15, 78 yards) to receiver Daytin Davis (4 catches, 30 yards) on a slant in the second quarter. The winning score for Gravette came on a “pick 6” in the third quarter as neither team would score in the fourth. Noe Avellaneda was Lincoln’s top rusher with 8 carries for 63 yards. Eli Rich had four catches for 30 pass-receiving yards.

The junior Wolves rebounded by posting a 27-13 win at Berryville Oct. 6. Lincoln jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. Lincoln had four plays of more than 20 yards. Assistant coach Perry Philpot was excited about two quick strikes for touchdowns.

“We scored on our first drive by way of a 40-yard jet sweep from Abraham Calvillo,” Philpot said. “On the next drive for our offense, (quarterback) Tyler Brewer completes a 5-yard pass to Daytin Davis, he spins out of an arm tackle to race down the sideline for a 29-yard touchdown pass.”

Berryville scored the next two touchdowns, but couldn’t convert a 2-point try. The Bobcats had a 50-yard run by Tristan Updegraff trimming the Lincoln lead to 14-6. The Bobcats’ Brett Parsons scored a 13-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter, but Lincoln led 14-13 at halftime. In the third quarter, Noe picked up a pair of rushing touchdowns from 10 yards and 28 yards out, making the final score, 27-13, and recording a Lincoln victory. Philpot noted defensively that Noe and Davis both had interceptions, while Mason Pagan had a fumble recovery.

Brewer completed 6 of 11 passes for 139 yards in the game. Noe came on in a mop-up role and was 2 of 2 for 42 yards. In all, the Wolves gained 181 passing yards and 97 rushing yards for 278 yards of total offense. Davis had 3 receptions for 58 yards; Calvillo, 2 for 42; Noe, 1 for 52; Arnold, 1 for 23; and Rich 1 for 6. Noe led the junior Wolves in rushing with 63 yards on 12 carries. Calvillo added 19 yards on 6 carries and Rich gained 15 yards on a single carry. The junior Wolves take on Shiloh Christian Thursday at Springdale with the seventh grade game beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by the junior high game at 7 p.m.
