Hugh Mills, Sr.
Hugh Louis Mills Sr., 93, of Fayetteville, Ark., died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017, at Willard Walker Hospice Home in Fayetteville. He was born in Marshall, Ark., on Sept. 14, 1923, to Elizabeth Florence “Bess” McBride Mills and William Thomas “W.T.” Mills Sr.
He delayed college to join the Army, where he went on to serve as an officer in the Medical Administrative Corps during WWII. After his military service, he received a Doctorate degree in Education from the University of Arkansas and spent many years as an educator and Superintendent of Schools in Monticello and Hot Springs, Ark. He was able to return to the University of Arkansas serving as the Dean of Continuing Education in Fayetteville until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Don McCollum Mills, also of Fayetteville; his four children, Hugh Mills Jr. and wife Sharyn of Kansas City, Mo., Nancy Jarratt and husband Denny of Forrest City, Ark., John Mills and wife Carol of Farmington, Ark. and Jim Mills and wife Lee Anne of Rogers, Ark.; six grandchildren, Joe and Stephanie Jarratt of Memphis, Tenn., Hugh and Nicole Jarratt of Fayetteville, Hannah, Madeline and Samantha of Fayetteville and Kate Mills of Rogers; four great- grandchildren, Will and Jack Jarratt of Memphis, McCall and Bo Jarratt of Fayetteville; and two nephews, Jim Mills of Searcy, Ark., and Kirk Parry of Columbia, Mo.
A graveside memorial service was held Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, at East Lawn Cemetery in Marshall. The family requests memorials be sent to the Willard Walker Hospice Home, 325 E. Longview Street, Fayetteville, AR 73703 or to a charity of your choice.
Roller-Coffman Funeral Home in Marshall was in charge of arrangements.
