New Athletic Training Programs Sprout Up At Lincoln
LINCOLN — Things players and coaches have dreamed of in the past are fast becoming reality in the season of the unprecedented.
With the completion of Lincoln’s new Football Fieldhouse at the high school, Lincoln head baseball coach Justin Bounds, who teaches at the junior high and doubles as assistant football coach, has been quick to make use of the vacated weight room across town at the junior high. Working in conjunction with fellow assistant football coach and head softball coach Beau Collins, Bounds established a training regimen for baseball and softball players not involved in fall sports. He is also helping basketball athletes train.
“The majority of the baseball team are out here on the football field, which I think is good,” Bounds said. “A few are over in basketball. A handful are over with me.”
“Everybody kind of has their own space now. We’re not all crammed into the same room. We’re excited, the kids are excited. It’s a good day to be a Wolf.”
Collins appreciates Bounds’ initiative and his willingness to pick up high school athletes and supervise their workouts.
“The biggest development is the baseball and softball players that don’t play fall sports are in there lifting weights,” Collins said. “Once or twice a week they get to work on skill training.”
Collins said the workouts are intended to make both the baseball and softball programs better and give Lincoln an edge.
Bounds drew from an Alpha Wolf workout week directed by Lincoln athletic director Deon Birkes in July, which brought all Lincoln athletes together from various sports for a combined training regimen.
“We had a big Alpha Wolf Workout this summer with Coach Birkes, I’m trying to continue that this fall,” Bounds said. “We’re trying to bring everybody together. Coach Collins and I have tried to schedule home games on the same day. We’re trying to build more school spirit and togetherness.”
