First-time visitors to Disney’s Hollywood Studios will find a dozen rides and shows, all of them well worth seeing, although there are a couple of points to keep in mind.

One attraction, Disney Junior Live on Stage, is really best suited to Disney Junior fans. Older kids may not enjoy it as much.

Three attractions are thrill rides: Tower of Terror, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, and Star Tours. Tower of Terror features scary drops; Rock ‘n’ Roller is a no-holds-barred roller coaster, and Star Tours simulates crashes and battles. All three may be rough on those subject to motion sickness, and all three have minimum height requirements—40 inches at Tower of Terror and Star Tours, and 48 inches at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster

The nighttime spectacular Fantasmic! is one of the best offerings at Walt Disney World. It depicts a struggle between Mickey and a host of Disney villains, and the villains may be a little too scary for young children. Families avoiding Fantasmic! will still have an evening show to see as the new Star Wars fireworks display, Symphony in the Stars: A Galactic Spectacular, soars nightly.

That said, if your group is old enough and tall enough for the thrill rides and Fantasmic!, there’s nothing at DHS except Disney Junior that I’d recommend skipping. Fitting all of the rides and shows into a single day can be hard, partly because of show schedules, and partly because of the Fastpass+ tiering you’ll find at the Studios. Three rides in Tier One—from which you can only book one—build lines quickly, Toy Story Midway Mania, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, and the Great Movie Ride.

Most folks will do best if they pick Toy Story Midway Mania! as their “Tier One” Fastpass+ pick, head straight for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at park opening, and then The Great Movie Ride. Any two of Tower of Terror, Voyage of the Little Mermaid, Star Tours and the Frozen Sing-along would make good Tier Two Fastpass+ choices.

So with youngsters, see Disney Junior and avoid the thrill rides and Fantasmic!; with older kids, follow my Fastpass+ and park-open suggestions and see everything except Disney Junior—then you’ll have a wonderful day!
