CELEBRITIES OFTEN LEND THEIR NAME AND FAME FOR GREAT CAUSES. They pick a cause, a community issue or a disease and “endorse the cause”. As part of that endorsement, they often donate their time for public service announcements and even pose for a few photography sessions Make no mistake, these endorsements go a long way to “help the cause”. But few take the endorsement to the next level. Few roll up their sleeves up and join the fight. And even fewer actually take the reins and lead the fight. But then, Kathy Bates is mad as hell. We had the opportunity to interview Kathy Bates for the lead story and cover of this issue. We expected an agent or public relations firm to send us prepared remarks, carefully drafted and “approved for public distribution”. After all, that has been our experience in the past. To our pleasant surprise, we received a personal phone call from Kathy Bates. She wanted to tell the story her way and in her words. This month’s main feature is the result of that interview – full of fight, emotion, drive and the honesty that is Kathy Bates. We hope we have captured her spirit in the story, but to be fair to Ms. Bates, even though we were impressed with her as a person, we realize her challenge and her goal is to tell the Lymphedema story, not only through her eyes and words, but through the eyes of some of those living with Lymphedema. We urge you to read the story and then understand the disease. Hopefully you will do your part to help those million Americans suffering with the disease. Till next month.
