Lady Bulldogs fall to Lady Elks, Lady Saints on road
SPRINGDALE — It was an action-packed evening as the Decatur Lady Bulldog volleyball team traveled to Springdale Sept. 21 to face the 1A/4A conference leader, Shiloh Christian’s Lady Saints, in the gym at Shiloh Christian.
The Lady Saints came into the Decatur contest undefeated in the conference, ahead of the Gravette Lady Lions.
The Lady Bulldogs stunned the Lady Saints in the first set, quickly amassing four unanswered points before Shiloh finally scored. Decatur’s lead was shortlived as the Shiloh team regained its composure and quickly built a large lead. The Lady Bulldogs did have a short run but it was too little. The Lady Saints took the first set, 25-9.
During the second set, the Lady Saints were able to use gaps on the Decatur side of the net and drop the ball in between Lady Bulldog players. They quickly built a commanding lead early in the set.
Trailing by 10 points, the Lady Bulldogs turned up the intensity and suddenly came to life, drawing Decatur fans into the contest. On outstanding ball handling by Desi Meek, Talor Thompson, Mathline Jesse, Destiny Meija, Sofia Killebrew, Mailee Xiong, Kaylee Morales, Diana Reza and Natalia Rodrguez, the Lady Bulldogs prompted several long rallies and managed to pull within five before the Lady Saints caught their second wind and pulled ahead, eventually taking the set, 25-10.
In the third set, the Lady Saints again proved too much for the Lady Bulldogs and took the final set, 25-8, and the match, 3-0.
Earlier in the week, the Lady Bulldogs traveled to Elkins to take on the Lady Elks of Elkins High School in another conference match Sept. 19. They lost in three sets, 25-9, 25-12 and 25-13.
