Pi­o­neers drop three games

GEN­TRY — The Pi­o­neers came up short in play last week, los­ing to Jay, Okla., on Thurs­day, Har­ri­son on March 6 and Elkins on March 5.

The Gen­try boys lost to Jay Thurs­day at the Mer­rill Reynolds Memo­rial Com­plex in Gen­try af­ter Jay took an early lead by scor­ing five runs each in the first and sec­ond in­nings.

Af­ter pick­ing up a solo run in the bot­tom of the first when Dy­lan Ray­burn scored on a Myles McFer­ron sac­ri­fice to short, the Pi­o­neers scored six in the bot­tom of the sec­ond in­ning. Ay­den Smartt hit a ground ball out into left and brought home Ross Wil­moth, and Rowdy Tram­mell and Gar­rett Matthews scored on an er­ror by the left fielder. Smartt scored on a McFer­ron sin­gle, and Ray­burn and McFer­ron scored on a Pey­ton Wright sin­gle.

Gen­try man­aged another two runs in both the fourth and sixth in­nings, but Jay added one in the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the sev­enth to take the game, 14-11.

Gen­try had 10 hits in the game. Jay had eight. Gen­try had 11 er­rors to Jay’s four.

McFer­ron, Smartt and Damon Phillps pitched for Gen­try.

Against Har­ri­son in Gravette on March 6, the Pi­o­neers lost, 5-1, in three in­nings, with the game be­ing called early due to the weather.

Gen­try’s only run came in the first in­ning when Ay­den Smartt crossed the plate.

Har­ri­son scored one in the first and four in the third in­ning.

Dy­lan Ray­burn and Damon Phillips pitched for Gen­try.

On March 5, the Pi­o­neers hosted the vis­it­ing Elkins Elks but lost the game in the top of the first when nine Elks crossed the plate.

The Pi­o­neers scored solo runs in the sec­ond, third and fourth in­nings.

Elkins fin­ished with 14 runs on 11 hits, and Gen­try had three runs on four hits. Each team was charged with only one er­ror.

Kyke Dil­beck, Kon­ner Hodges, Gar­rett Matthews and Colby Young all took turns on the mound for Gen­try.
