Lady Bulldogs win big at home
DECATUR — For the Decatur Lady Bulldogs, the Sept. 25 varsity volleyball match against the Northwest Arkansas Classic Academy Lady Spartans could be the final contest played at Peterson Gym in Decatur this season. So the girls wanted to leave the old gym in style, with a big win against the Lady Spartans in three straight sets.
With the Decatur Middle School gym nearing completion, school administrators wanted to play at least one volleyball match in the new facility before the end of the season. That game with Mulberry marks the final home contest for the Lady Bulldogs before traveling to Lavaca Oct. 4 for the last regular season match of 2018.
Senior Desi Meek, team captain, led the Lady Bulldogs in establishing a 13-point lead early in the first set, 17-4. With a wide margin on the scoreboard, Tajhe Turner, Decatur volleyball coach, decided to replace her six starters with members of the junior varsity team which won its earlier match against Classical Academy.
The girls were a little shaky at first, which allowed the Lady Spartans to cut the lead down to seven. Once the younger players calmed down and began to concentrate on the task at hand, the Lady Bulldogs began pulling away from the Lady Spartans and eventually claimed the victory, 25-16.
The second set was a mirror image of the first as the Lady Bulldogs jumped out in front by 10 early in the contest. And like before, the junior varsity came in and won that set, 25-13.
The varsity played out the third and final set, outperforming the Lady Spartans for yet another 25-13 win and the match in three sets.
The Decatur Lady Bulldogs traveled south Sept. 27, facing the Hackett Lady Hornets in a conference showdown at Hackett High School. Earlier in the season, the Lady Hornets put down the Lady Bulldogs, three sets to one, for the win.
The Lady Hornets took command of the contest from the onset and never looked back, taking three straight sets from a stunned Lady Bulldog team, 25-2, 25-9 and 25-10.
The Lady Bulldogs will play their final volleyball match of the 2018 regular season Oct. 4 when they travel to Lavaca to face the Lady Golden Arrows in the gym at Lavaca High School. The match is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start time with the junior high team. The Lady Bulldogs Varsity team will take the court at the conclusion of the junior varsity match.
Note: It was reported that the Lady Bulldogs lost the road game against Mulberry Sept. 18. The Decatur Lady Bulldogs won that conference game in three straight sets.
Aaliyah Orozco (Decatur 3) prepares to spike the ball back into Lady Spartan territory during the early stage of the Decatur-NWA Classical Academy varsity march at Peterson Gym in Decatur Sept. 25. With a 13-point lead in set one, Orozco and her fellow junior varsity teammates came in and finished the set with a win.
