The 31-year- old entrepreneur from Homer talks about how he learned to surf the Alaska waves.

Dickerson, 31, has lived in Homer nearly all his life and first started trying to surf Alaska waves sometime before he was old enough for a driver’s license but “old enough for my mom to leave me at the beach alone.” While riding Alaska swells and tides, he became a professional photographer around 2001, started Surf Alaska in 2005 and has a captain’s license to help run the former purse seine vessel Milo with Mike McCune, owner of Ocean Swell Ventures. His photo of brother Fred surfing at Yakutat has become the new Ice Bay IPA label for Alaskan Brewing Co. and he was also a world finalist for the Red Bull sports photography contest last fall for his aerial shot of friends surfing the Turnagain Arm bore tide in Cook Inlet — a photo he took from a motorized parachute high above the waves.
