Finding Your Alaska

Where Alaska - - Editor's Itinerary -

The running joke among locals about Anchorage is that it is “20 minutes from Alaska.” Like most jokes, there is some truth to that given the metro population is 10 times larger than the next-largest cities of Juneau and Fairbanks. Also like most jokes, it’s an exaggeration. On my second day heading to work back in 2010, I heard a traffic report of a moose crossing a busy street and thought to myself, “yep, I’m in Alaska.” There is plenty of Alaska in Anchorage whether it is a gorgeous sunrise over the Chugach to the east, spotting Denali more than a 100 miles to the north on a clear day or being immersed in the green belt of trails snaking around the city. In my other job as editor of the Alaska Journal of Commerce, I’ve been fortunate to travel around this amazing state to places such as Kodiak and Nome, and to remote mining prospects only accessible by helicopter. My favorite experience, however, was traveling the state with my parents when they visited for 10 days in late summer 2012. They found their Alaska, and I hope this magazine helps you discover yours.
