BECHTLER MU­SEUM OF MOD­ERN ART—

This mod­ern art mu­seum, housed in­side a vis­ually strik­ing build­ing de­signed by Swiss Ar­chi­tect Mario Botta, con­tains a col­lec­tion of 20th-cen­tury art, much of which has never be­fore been avail­able for pub­lic view­ing. The col­lec­tion in­cludes works by Warhol, Miró and Pi­casso, among oth­ers. Short on time? Don’t miss the de­light­ful food at the mu­seum’s café. CAROLI­NAS AVI­A­TION MU­SEUM—

Lo­cated at the Char­lotte-Dou­glas In­ter­na­tional Air­port, the mu­seum dis­plays his­toric air­craft and ar­ti­facts that tell sto­ries of flight and avi­a­tion from the Wright Broth­ers un­til now. It’s also home to US Air­ways Flight 1549 from the fa­mous “Mir­a­cle on the Hud­son” emer­gency land­ing. The air­craft col­lec­tion at the mu­seum in­cludes com­mer­cial, mil­i­tary, civil/gen­eral avi­a­tion and he­li­copters. Ad­mis­sion:

MCDOW­ELL NA­TURE CEN­TER AND PRE­SERVE—

This na­ture cen­ter and pre­serve of­fers ev­ery­thing from tow­er­ing trees, bab­bling brooks, lake views and prairie restora­tions. There are seven miles of trails avail­able to hike and ex­plore, and they’re dog friendly too. Boat­ing and fish­ing are also en­cour­aged, and if you’re look­ing to spend your time here for mul­ti­ple days, try us­ing their camp­site. 15222 South York Rd., 704.875.1391.

RO­MARE BEAR­DEN PARK—

Named for the noted Char­lotte artist, this newer, 5.4-acre Up­town park sits near BB&T Ball­park and is host to a num­ber of an­nual events, mu­sic se­ries and free fit­ness classes. www.charmeck.org. 300 S. Church St. Map 2 D4
