Heralded as China’s most renowned international artist, photographer Ai Weiwei has caused waves by being a vocal critic of his home country’s government (he was even detained by China for 81 days). This retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Photography, which runs through July 2, traces Weiwei from his days in the 1980’s East Village to his politically-influenced work today, which centers on global humanitarian crises.
