Bye-bye, bad breath!
At least 92 million of us worry enough about bad breath to spend $8 billion every year trying to prevent it—yet there’s no need! Scientists have uncovered ways to sweeten your breath quickly, inexpensively and without harsh chemicals!
1 Make a lasting mouthwash!
Most of today’s over-the-counter mouthwashes rely on alcohol to freshen breath, which only works temporarily. For a rinse with real staying power, simply add six drops each of 100% pure therapeutic-grade cinnamon, peppermint and tea tree essential oils to one cup of water. These germicidal oils destroy mouth bacteria on contact, according to Dental Research Journal. Just gargling with a few tablespoons of this mixture daily (shake first, then spit out the mouthwash and rinse with water) can nix breath problems in 72 hours, says study coauthor Ratika Sharma, PH.D.
2 KO trouble with yogurt!
Eating 6 oz. of unsweetened yogurt daily cuts bad breath 50% or more for 80% of women, research reveals. The gentle, good-foryou probiotic bacteria in yogurt crowd out the troublesome mouth germs that produce a “rotten egg” compound called hydrogen sulfide.
3 Chew seeds, not mints!
Instead of breath mints, carry a small bottle of coriander, cardamom, anise and/or fennel seeds in your purse and crunch a few whenever your breath needs a boost. Natural oils in these seeds freshen breath faster— and at least 60 minutes longer—than mints, gums and similar options, research shows.
4 Sip green tea after dessert!
You’ve probably heard that green tea helps protect against cancer and heart disease. Now a study in the journal Archives of Oral Biology suggests that sipping 6 oz. after meals cuts your risk of bad breath 50%! The brew contains compounds that coat mouth bacteria and make them slippery so they can’t stick to your gums and teeth, explains study coauthor Abraham Reznick, PH.D.
