BUR­RIL­LVILLE — Jocelyn Val­liere scored a game-high 12 points and sopho­more guard Alyssa Simp­son added eight points to lead the Bur­ril­lville girls bas­ket­ball team to a 38-17 In­jury Fund vic­tory over Block Is­land Thurs­day af­ter­noon.

Bur­ril­lville (1-0) jumped out to a com­fort­able half­time lead thanks to tran­si­tion of­fense, which could Sam Stan­ton said will be the key to the team’s suc­cess in Divi­sion III this sea­son.

Block Is­land (17) re­ceived a teamhigh six points from Ruby Craw­ford and five more from Julia Gas­ner. The Hur­ri­canes face an­other Black­stone Val­ley squad Satur­day af­ter­noon when North Smith­field heads to New Shore­ham.

The Bron­cos will face a pair of dif­fi­cult tests over the week­end in Pon­a­ganset, start­ing with Satur­day’s 1 p.m. con­test against the Chief­tains.
