BOSTON (AP) — A Boston woman who beat her 3-yearold stepson to death has been sentenced to up to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Twenty-five-year-old Maria Buie had been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the killing of Kenai Whyte in the city’s Roxbury section in 2016. She pleaded guilty to the lesser charge Friday in Suffolk Superior Court as part of a plea deal.

A motive for the killing has never been disclosed. Authorities say Buie severely beat the boy in his father’s home, leaving him with head bruising, retinal bleeding, contusions and a fractured neck vertebra.

The boy’s mother, Ashley Young, told Buie in the courtroom that she would never forgive her. She said Kenai was a sweet, kind, gentle and happy boy.
