Putting the kill in killer app
Don’t tell my manager, but Gamescom was a bit of a party for me this year. Okay, I smashed my knee to a bloody pulp within minutes of arriving, but the following three days were spent hobbling between some of the finest videogames on the planet, trying to decide what to put on our cover this month. Battlefield 1 and Sea of Thieves were close contenders – we’ve got ample words on both – but it was the sunny-but-spiteful world of Dishonored 2’ s Karnaca that most wowed me. Taken alone, the level designs are some of the maddest I’ve seen – a house that exists in two time periods at once, or a clockwork mansion that rebuilds itself on the fly – but mixed with the experimental moves of assassins Corvo and Emily, it blossoms into something else entirely. Blood (my own) was shed in the making of this month’s issue; I’m confident that it was worth it.
