Square Enix announces it’s working with Marvel on a new Avengers game
Marvel is such a tease, showing us flashes of Captain America’s shield, and Thor’s hammer lying unattended in a sea of pixel-perfect rubble while flaunting its new relationship with Square Enix. The superhero purveyor didn’t show an awful lot in its first trailer, but the hints suggest something huge is on the way.
With all the broken Avenger gear and emphasis on ‘reassembling’, expect to see the gang back together to fight a new evil. And it won’t be a rehash of the Avengers arc you already know from the movie universe, instead boasting an entirely original plotline. So while it’ll definitely involve the likes of the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America, it might not be the versions of the characters you’re familiar with.
Taking a look at the current crop of Marvel comics already paints a very different world to the one that cinema-going audiences recognize. Thor is now a female character, Iron Man has taken young genius Riri Williams under his wing, and Bruce Banner is no more, with an entirely new Hulk who can now control his green outbursts. We think this is really for the best, as we were getting tired of the temper tantrums.

Whether the Avengers’ project will be taking more inspiration from the comics, or going a completely different route is yet to be seen, though there are a lot of characters that could be added to the line-up. These include the popular Spider-Gwen and Ms Marvel. Marvel has also promised that there will be multiple titles and ‘a universe gamers can play in for years to come’, which suggests we’ll be seeing far more of Marvel’s heroic line-up over the next few years. Maybe we’ll end up fighting alongside the Guardians Of The Galaxy, or even Squirrel Girl (we love her).
Taking on the first part of this project is Crystal Dynamics—the dev responsible for the excellent Tomb Raider reboot. With so much actionbased experience under its belt, this unexpected alliance is in good hands. We can already picture all those super heroics in beautiful motion.
There a long time to wait yet, with more details coming in 2018
Below Thor ain’t nothin’ without his hammer. Might as well call him Bore. Tee-hee.
