King of the castle
One of the pleasures of working on OXM is that we often get to sit down with developers who really love what they do, and are genuinely proud of their creations. This month, I got the chance to do just that during a trip to Bethesda’s offices to play Wolfenstein II. The game is as ridiculous, over-the-top, and fun as you would expect, but I came to appreciate it even more after hearing how Jens Matthies, its creative director, talked about the project. There are plenty of people who point fingers at modern developers and claim they are purposefully deceiving players, or making design decisions purely to squeeze money out of them. In my experience these examples are few and far between—far more often, I see people who pour everything they have into making a great experience. It’s what makes the games industry so damn cool. Enjoy the mag!
