The brain-biters are back, as the scari­est ever Nazi Zom­bies mode comes to Call Of Duty: WWII

“Toto, I have a feel­ing we’re not in Nacht derUn­toten any­more.” Sweet un­dead Je­sus! Sledge­ham­mer Games’ take on Nazi Zom­bies looks like one hell of a de­par­ture for the ab­surdly daft mini-game’s roots—a lone map back in 2008’s Cal­lOfDuty: WorldAtWar. You can tell key mem­bers of the Ac­tivi­sion-owned stu­dio once worked on EA’s sem­i­nal sur­vival hor­ror Dead­S­pace, be­cause this looks ab­so­lutely ter­ri­fy­ing.

“I have built more than just a new type of sol­dier,” hisses a sin­is­ter Ger­man doc­tor. “I have cre­ated the devil him­self.” Any­one else miss fir­ing campy ray guns back in WAW’s silly spin-off mode? Clearly, Cal­lOf Duty:

WWII’s Nazi Zom­bies wants to be an al­to­gether dif­fer­ent breed of brain­biter. The un­dead you see in the mode’s de­but trailer, which was re­vealed at San Diego Comic-Con, are feral, homi­ci­dally mo­ti­vated sav­ages. A lot of them also seem to be on fire.

“We’re go­ing back to our roots,” se­nior di­rec­tor Jon Hors­ley tells OXM’s sis­ter web­site GamesRadar. “We’re back to World War II, with a gritty, re­al­is­tic por­trayal of the set­tings. We’re part of that uni­verse, of that dark­est cor­ner of that uni­verse. Our char­ter was to have the scari­est zom­bie mode ever.” Well, if those flam­ing zombs are any­thing to go by, mis­sion hor­ri­bly ac­com­plished.

Killing ma­chines

In­deed, COD’s lat­est cof­fin-dodgers have been pur­pose-built for war­fare, as the mode’s lead di­rec­tor Cameron Day­ton tells GamesRadar. “So many other sto­ries have ex­plored the bi­o­log­i­cal, vi­ral, in­fec­tious plague ele­ment of the story, and we wanted to see, what if th­ese were zom­bies that were con­structed? What if they were en­gi­neered and built as weapons as war?” The trailer cer­tainly lingers on a va­ri­ety of chill­ing pieces of Franken­stein-es­que lab­o­ra­tory equip­ment, and this lat­est zom­bies re­boot seems more in­ter­ested in giv­ing its un­dead a proper ori­gin story.

The hu­man cast of this four-player on­line co-op should also be more fleshed out than the clichéd ‘80s archetypes seen in In­finiteWar­fare’s car­ni­val-themed take on COD Zom­bies… well, at least un­til that flesh is ripped off in ag­o­nis­ing fash­ion. Dare­devil’s Elodie Yung is for­mer historian Olivia Du­rant, PulpFic­tion’s Ving Rhames stars as the group’s mus­cle, Jef­fer­son Potts, while Kath­eryn Win­nick of Vik­ings fame ap­pears as Marie Fis­cher, an en­gi­neer out to res­cue her brother.

The cast may mine Hol­ly­wood, but the ac­tual set­ting is more hy­pother­mia-court­ing. Set in the snowy Bavar­ian vil­lage of Mit­tel­burg, Hynd and co must band to­gether to re­cover price­less works of art stolen by the Axis pow­ers—and yes, we’re also now pic­tur­ing that episode of The

Simp­sons where Grandpa and Mr Burns fight over WWII paint­ings. Of course, said vil­lage also houses a Nazi army of the dead. Sorry, art lovers.

Nazi Zom­bies has al­ways of­fered throw­away fun, but the last few in­stal­ments of this slap­stick spin-off have strug­gled for gen­uinely fresh ideas. Let’s hope Sledge­ham­mer’s take can scare the wits out of all of us while throw­ing in ter­ri­fy­ing new game­play tweaks when COD:WWII launches on Novem­ber 3.
