Final Fantasy’s back catalogue joins Xbox One

XBox: The Official Magazine (US) - - START -

It’s been running for more than 30 years, spanning 15 main titles and dozens of spinoffs, cementing it as one of the world’s best known videogame series. Finally some of its most famous entries are coming to Xbox. That’s right, Final Fantasy VII and a bunch of others will be playable on the world’s most powerful console from early 2019. Fans of old-school RPGs will be rejoicing at the news, and for those of you who haven’t played any of the back catalogue, it’s a perfect opportunity to explore what makes the series beloved by so many. Unfortunately not every game will make the jump, but soon you’ll be

able to play VII, IX, X, X-2, XII and World Of Final Fantasy Maxima – a cutesy spin-off with toy-like versions of all of the series’ heroes. Each one will be the latest HD re-releases, but with one notable absence – VIII won’t be joining the party as there’s no modern version of it available to play. So any Squall or Seifer fans will have to continue their moping for a while longer yet.

In the past Final Fantasy was famous for only being available to play on Sony consoles. The releases come at a time when the boundaries between consoles is softening with

Fortnite crossplay leading the charge and the fact that this Japanese powerhouse series is coming to Xbox is encouraging. Microsoft already works closely with Nintendo, and now with more traditional PlayStationbased games coming to all consoles perhaps the barriers are weakening and we’ll all experience a shared gaming utopia in the near future.

Here’s hoping Final Fantasy XIV, the series latest MMO, will be one of the first games to make that jump. You’ll be able to play these classic games from early 2019.
