AWC men’s soccer wins with 10 men
Even playing with 10 men, the No. 15 Arizona Western men’s soccer team managed to pull out a win against Mesa at home Thursday. Freshman forward Steve Mendoza, from San Luis, received a red card in the 67th minute during a scoreless game.
Twelve minutes later, despite the disadvantage, George Sanchez scored the match’s first goal to give the Matadors (4-1-2 overall, 4-1-2 Arizona Community College Athletic Conference) a 1-0 lead. Jafet Sanchez had the assist on the goal, which was the only score of the night.
Kofa 3, Alhambra 0
The Kings dominated, winning by set scores of 25-7, 25-5 and 25-7. Laura Sanderson (10 kills), Alyssa Sergent (7 aces), Keiley Sharp (6 aces) and Isabel Ponce (30 assists) led the way.
Gila Ridge 3, San Luis 0
Shanna Register and Katiana Oviedo both had nine kills for the Hawks, who won by set scores of 25-13, 25-21 and 25-23. Brielle Hill added eight kills, while Tayler Ellsworth (14 assists) and Kaylin Ellsworth had five kills apiece.

The Raiders won by set scores of 25-14, 25-11, 25-17.
PREP BOYS GOLF Gila Ridge’s Ramirez continues strong season
The Hawks had their narrowest victory of the season Thursday at Las Barrancas Golf Course, shooting a 161, while Cibola had a 166.
David Ramirez was the medalist with a 2-over 38, marking the sixth time in seven matches that he was the top golfer. Cibola’s Jose Lira and Gila Ridge’s Dennis Norris did tie Ramirez with a 2-over 38.
Carlos Vazquez (5-over
41), Ethan Upayokin (8-over 44) and Joab Beck (9-over 45) were the other Gila Ridge scores. Cibola’s other golfers were Hunter Nelson (4-over 40), Austin Gomes (6-over 42) and Cruz Trujillo (10-over 46).
Richard Carter’s 14-over 50 led Yuma High, which came in third place with a 238.
PREP GIRLS GOLF Cibola’s Hernandez has top score, but Gila Ridge wins
Isabelle Hernandez’s 4-over 40 made her the medalist of Thursday at Las Barrancas, but the Hawks were victorious as a team, scoring a 193 compared to the Raiders’ 228.
Caitlyn Grant (7-over 43) and Kylee Gerber (10-over 46) led Gila Ridge.
Yuma High took third place, shooting a 296.
