AWC men’s soc­cer wins with 10 men


Even play­ing with 10 men, the No. 15 Ari­zona Western men’s soc­cer team man­aged to pull out a win against Mesa at home Thurs­day. Fresh­man for­ward Steve Mendoza, from San Luis, re­ceived a red card in the 67th minute dur­ing a score­less game.

Twelve min­utes later, de­spite the dis­ad­van­tage, Ge­orge Sanchez scored the match’s first goal to give the Mata­dors (4-1-2 over­all, 4-1-2 Ari­zona Com­mu­nity Col­lege Ath­letic Con­fer­ence) a 1-0 lead. Jafet Sanchez had the as­sist on the goal, which was the only score of the night.

Kofa 3, Al­ham­bra 0

The Kings dom­i­nated, win­ning by set scores of 25-7, 25-5 and 25-7. Laura San­der­son (10 kills), Alyssa Ser­gent (7 aces), Kei­ley Sharp (6 aces) and Is­abel Ponce (30 as­sists) led the way.

Gila Ridge 3, San Luis 0

Shanna Reg­is­ter and Ka­tiana Oviedo both had nine kills for the Hawks, who won by set scores of 25-13, 25-21 and 25-23. Brielle Hill added eight kills, while Tayler Ellsworth (14 as­sists) and Kaylin Ellsworth had five kills apiece.

Averi Jo (15 digs), Ali Sch­muck (6 kills, 8 as­sists, 3 aces), Syd­ney Neu­mann (5 kills, 5 blocks) and Tay­lor

Wal­ton (7 kills, 4 blocks) were the top per­form­ers for the Sham­rocks, who lost 17-25, 2325, 25-13, 18-25.

Ci­bola 3, Yuma High 0

The Raiders won by set scores of 25-14, 25-11, 25-17.

PREP BOYS GOLF Gila Ridge’s Ramirez con­tin­ues strong sea­son

The Hawks had their nar­row­est vic­tory of the sea­son Thurs­day at Las Bar­ran­cas Golf Course, shoot­ing a 161, while Ci­bola had a 166.

David Ramirez was the medal­ist with a 2-over 38, mark­ing the sixth time in seven matches that he was the top golfer. Ci­bola’s Jose Lira and Gila Ridge’s Dennis Nor­ris did tie Ramirez with a 2-over 38.

Car­los Vazquez (5-over

41), Ethan Upayokin (8-over 44) and Joab Beck (9-over 45) were the other Gila Ridge scores. Ci­bola’s other golfers were Hunter Nel­son (4-over 40), Austin Gomes (6-over 42) and Cruz Tru­jillo (10-over 46).

Richard Carter’s 14-over 50 led Yuma High, which came in third place with a 238.

PREP GIRLS GOLF Ci­bola’s Her­nan­dez has top score, but Gila Ridge wins

Is­abelle Her­nan­dez’s 4-over 40 made her the medal­ist of Thurs­day at Las Bar­ran­cas, but the Hawks were vic­to­ri­ous as a team, scor­ing a 193 com­pared to the Raiders’ 228.

Cait­lyn Grant (7-over 43) and Kylee Gerber (10-over 46) led Gila Ridge.

Yuma High took third place, shoot­ing a 296.
