Lisa Magdaleno (9 kills), Heather Kobbeman (7 kills) and Lety Lomeli (5 kills) helped the Kofa volleyball team to a 15-2, 15-7 victory over Yuma High, sparking a debate about whether Kofa or Cibola was the city champ. The two teams split vs. each other. Cibola coach Marty Garcia claimed the title was the Raiders, since they were city champs the year before. Kofa coach Faith Klostreich argued that it should be the Kings, since they outscored the Raiders 56-55 over their two matches. In any event, Kofa got the last laugh, because it qualified for state that year (for the first time since 1979) while Cibola did not.
