First Take

Yuma Sun - - NEWS - By Grady Garrett, sports editor

A high school coach recently emailed me with a question regarding a project he’s working on; I’d call it a database of the school’s athletic history.

As a journalist, I love putting things into historical perspective — “first time since” types of details — and also just find value in having on file something like, say, a list of every wrestling state champ in Yuma County history.

But the Arizona Interscholastic Association doesn’t keep, uh, the most extensive of records, so it’s up to schools (or the local newspaper) to make sure their history doesn’t get lost.

So hearing of somebody going to the effort it takes to locate decades-old high school sports results — sifting through online newspaper archives is about your only option, unless somebody already has what you’re looking for (I might!) — is awesome.
