The Arizona Western football team is probably headed to Mississippi.
The Matadors remained at No. 2, for the fifth week in a row, Monday with the release of the final regular-season NJCAA poll, which sets up for an all-but-announced national championship matchup of No. 1 East Mississippi vs. AWC in the Mississippi Bowl on Dec. 3.
EMCC (10-1 overall) retained the top spot thanks to a doubleovertime win over then-No. 4 Northwest Mississippi on Saturday.
The Matadors (9-0), who are the only undefeated team in the top 10, actually lost three first-place votes this week despite beating then-No. 19 Scottsdale by 52.
Of the nine first-place votes, East Mississippi got three, AWC got one and No. 3 Iowa Western actually got the most with five. But the human poll only makes up part of the rankings (other part is computer-generated), and it wasn’t likely the Matadors would have been able to overtake EMCC no matter how those votes were distributed.
This also means the Dec. 2 El Toro Bowl all-but-officially will feature two non-local teams.
Bowl matchups will made official this afternoon.
