Textbooks Using International Best Practices

The next academic year is in the coming. Of late, we have witnessed scores of changes in public education, one of them being the transition to an 11year school system. And this September, the first eleventhgraders are to continue their studies in school.

According to experts from the Republican Center for Education, in early May 2018, new textbooks for grades 1, 2 and 11 were examined by university professors and more than 300 experienced specialists in public education. On the eve of the school year, workbooks for foreign languages were also prepared for the third and fourth grades, textbooks and manuals for the 6th ones. Work is underway at the Sharq Publishers, publishing and polygraphic creative houses Uzbekistan, Gafur Gulyam, Uqituvchi, as well as Yangiyul polygraph service and Credo Print. In total, it is planned to release 406 titles in the amount of 21.7 million copies.

For the 11th grade, textbooks on liberal arts, exact, natural, applied sciences in seven languages and foreign languages have been written. Among them there are both traditional and improved disciplines, as well as new ones (for example, Foundations of Entrepreneurship). They were prepared by a group of 104 specialists, scientists, professors and teachers of higher and public education systems. They all meet modern requirements, and contain information about the socioeconomic reforms taking place in the country. Particular attention is paid to the peculiarities of the curriculum, the age-related abilities of children, and also the design of texts.

The year 2018 was announced in Uzbekistan as the Year of Support for Active Enterprise, Innovative Ideas and Technologies. These directions are somehow connected with mathematics and computer science. Therefore, the related literature has been updated.

“Math textbooks for the 10th and 11th grades have been written and published with an eye to international best practices. In particular, the books for the 11th grade “Mathematics” (Fundamentals of Algebra and Analysis) and “Geometry” were developed on the basis of sources from Singapore, South Korea, England, Australia. The study of foreign experience will be continued. The plans are to introduce additional literature from abroad into the academic program for use in schools with in- depth study of disciplines,” says the coauthor of the textbook, director of Mirzo Ulugbek specialized boarding school for in- depth study of mathematics, astronomy, physics and computer science, PhD in Mathematics Shuhrat Ismailov. “The authors tried to eliminate the congestion of textbooks with redundant abstract theoretical information and assignments, which will make the classes more flexible and practice oriented. For writing, the methodology of teaching “Mathematics for International Students” of the international educational program “IB Diploma Program” was studied using the components ‘ sets and logic’, ‘ financial mathematics’, ‘ functions’, ‘ trigonometry’, ‘ combinatorics’, ‘ data analysis’, ‘ probability theory and statistics’. In addition, building on the Singaporean experience, the Mathematics textbook for 6th class has been issued.”

“For the first time a textbook on computer science for 11th grade has been published. N. Taylakov, U. Mirsanov, A. Abduganiyev, A. Ahmedov participated in its preparation. It is also designed for use in academic lyceums and professional colleges,” says the volume’s co- author, deputy director of the Republican Education Center Mehriniso Pardayeva. “The book is oriented more towards practical exercises and self- education of children. There are also materials for self- examination, many references to information resources, additional literature, through which students can enrich knowledge and apply them in life.”

... Very soon we are going to learn how effective the new generation of textbooks is, including those prepared for the 11th grade. They, like the rest, are expected to be updated every five years. Now, not only experts, but also citizens, who can address complaints and recommendations to the relevant authorities, will participate in this process.
