4For hundreds of years the Lope Lope river has flowed down to the sea carrying fine sand that has spread out to create a wide expanse of beach that has grown and spread – now it is one of the very few beaches in Vanuatu that have over 100 metres of clean white sand at low tide, with sandbanks where seabirds flock to rest and chitter chatter while they do. At the edge of the sand, the water invites you in to swim, year round, with temperatures never below 27 degrees - at high tide you can simply swim directly from your ‘back door’. A little further out, world-class coral reefs with magnificent colours and a myriad of fish swimming amongst it are a snorkeler or diver’s paradise. The beautiful Aese Island lies across the water providing a huge breakwater that protects the inner beach from ocean swells and waves. On one side of the subdivision, the river runs down to the sea and you can swim in the ‘blue’ hole where it deepens and widens just before it spills out onto the beach. During WW2 this was a popular R & R spot for the troops stationed here, with its wide expanses of sand providing a place to kick a ball around or simply soak up the tropical sun and relax.
