Writer Trung Trung Ñænh

Af­ter join­ing the army at 21 in 1968, Trung Trung Ñænh was sent south to Gia Lai Prov­ince at the height of the lib­er­a­tion war. Nine years later, he went to work in the Cre­ative Writ­ing Camp in the Fifth Zone. In 1979, he en­rolled in the first class of the now- de­funct Nguyeãn Du Writ­ing School. In 1983, he be­came ed­i­tor of the mag­a­zine for the mil­i­tary cir­cle, Vaên Ngheä Quaân Ñoäi ( The Mil­i­tary Lit­er­a­ture Art). In 2003, he was de­mo­bilised and be­came Deputy Ed­i­tor- inChief of the Vaên Ngheä ( Lit­er­ary News­pa­per). Later, he moved to the Writ­ers' Pub­lish­ing House. Af­ter more than 20 years in the army and writ­ing about it, Trung has won many lit­er­ary prizes in Vieät Nam and in ASEAN. This month Out­look in­tro­duces one of his short sto­ries, a slice of the harsh post- war years af­ter 1975.
